Most people know this organization as NASA and nothing more. Many of them aren’t aware that it stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is the body responsible for planning all the activities regarding space visits and exploration. The NASA are often lauded for their achievements. One of those is the success of the Apollo space mission. Sometimes, they are given some sticks for their failures as well. One of those failures is tragedy of the Challenger crash.
There are so many things the NASA does besides traveling in rockets. Below are some things you probably don’t know about the NASA. They include some things that the government doesn’t want you to know either.
The Story Concerning The Pen
The narrative surrounding the pen is false. The story says that the NASA spent millions of dollars to develop a pen that is capable of working in space. This is because your average pen wouldn’t work in a zero gravity environment. The other side of the story was that Russian Cosmonauts were satisfied using their pencils instead.
The first thing to be aware of is that the NASA didn’t spend such ridiculous sum of money to develop any pen. Those who say it is preferable to use lead pencils in space are also wrong. This is because there’s a high probability that dust from lead or graphite pencil will either break everything or end up in the air filtration system. Worst still, it may be breathed by the astronauts themselves. So the stories surrounding the pen and pencil isn’t true.
Space Shuttles Are Unclean
Most of the time, the NASA want the public to view its shuttles as clean, glistening, and gleaming. All the photographs, videos of merchandise that has space shuttles in them are made to appear white and beautiful to look at. An example is the Discovery.
The truth however is that space shuttles have the thing in common with a vehicle used in transporting farm produce. This similarity is that both are dirty and unclean. The damaged, dirty shuttles are viewed as evidences of their long careers as well as a lot of spaceflights for NASA.
They Were Dragged Into The Cola Wars
The NASA were involved in a cold war that involved Coca-cola and Pepsi. According to reports, cans of Pepsi and Coca-cola were taken aboard the Challenger. A space shuttle. This was possible because the cans came with plastic lids and straws that were fitted at the top. This made it possible for them to be drank at Zero gravity.
Taking both brands however wasn’t the original plan. The only brand that was supposed to fly was the Coca-cola. When Pepsi discovered that theirs was onboard, they were convinced that one of the company’s intentions was to get free promo.
They Consume A Lot Of Foil
The space agency uses a lot of foil for its operations. Although it is scientifically advanced organization that is in the habit of developing things that are supposed to thrive in the vacuum of space. They may not be using the same kind of aluminum foil we use in houses. However, there is only a little difference between the ones we and theirs.
Whilst ours is silver, theirs is gold. Meaning that theirs is made with original gold and turned into foil. The importance of gold as a material for foil includes: high heat resistance that is important when the shuttle is about to be launched and when it is in space;
Other benefits of gold includes: Giving the needed protection owing to its high light reflective tendency; Prevent higher-energy particles; It is a good conductor used in electronic works, etc.
NASA Began As A Military Organization
While the organization is a scientific one, it was originally rivaling the DARPA. That stand for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The DARPA is a government agency that is concerned about building and developing weapons.
The DARPA were the popular rocket-designers for both military and scientific purposes alike. Their creations delivered both bombs and astronauts around the world as well as space respectively.
The Mars Mission Made Use Of Text Messages
A car-robot called the Mars Rover was launched into space and successfully landed in Mars in late 2012. Since its landing, the robot has done a lot of scientific stuffs which the public has failed to understand. The robot netted NASA a lot of column inches for the first time, which it needed seriously. The car robots do not interact via radio messages.
Instead, they communicate via text messages. Since the Mars Rovers travel across the solar system, they do not utilize any form of emojis.
Aldrin Took Communion On The Moon
This is one of the secrets that most people don’t know about the Apollo 11 mission. Aldrin radioed a communication back to earth immediately the lunar module touched down on the Sea of Tranquility. In the message, he enjoined everyone listening, regardless of their location to pause for a moment and think about the events that have happened in the past few hours. He also enjoined them to give thanks in his or her way afterwards.
He then opened a small plastic container that held bread and wine and read privately from John’s gospel. He ate the bread and drank the wine afterwards. Aldrin was an elder of the Webster Presbyterian Church.
Some People There Earn Money Doing Nothing
It is a known fact that NASA spends money on awkward things. One of those things is that they pay individuals in the form of bed rest study. In this study, people are offered employment and paid to do nothing. They are paid about $18,000.
In this bed rest study, the participants are given the permission to read books, watch televisions, participate in a study course, etc. They are even allowed to continue with their normal jobs. The clause however is that they wouldn’t get out of bed.
The aim of this study was to correctly gauge the impact of longterm spaceflight on the human body. One of those long distance travel to Mars is an example of such trips. This study involves 70 individuals and lasts up to 10 weeks.
The study was conducted in conditions that stimulate weightlessness. This condition was set in order to discover its impact on the body for an extended period of time. The beds in which the participants use are usually tilted to an angle of about 6 degrees. In a state wear the head is lower than the feet. This is done in order to trigger cardiovascular stress similar to the one experienced by astronauts in space.
This entails that particularly easy. The participants will have to lose muscle mass density as well as bone density. They also have to indulge in rehabilitation to get themselves back to normal. The rehabilitation program naturally includes exercises.
They Send Weird Stuff Into Space
Example of the things that have been taken into space includes Pepsi and Coca-cola. Other things that have been taken into space includes the following: a collection of signed NFL shirts, one of Lane Armstrong’s sweaty yellow one-piece, some dirts from Yankee Stadium, and also a bunch of NASCAR starter flags, etc.
The Apollo 11 Had To Hawk Their Autographs To Get Life Insurance
It is very difficult to purchase life insurance when an astronaut is about to go into space. When it became difficult for Neil Armstrong and other crew members of the Apollo 11, they hawked their autographs. What they did was to sign many envelops. They amounted to several hundreds of them. They also signed postcards and have friends postmark them July 16 or 20. Those dates were supposed to be the fate for the launch or the moon landing. They figured out that those autographs would be worth some amount of money if they happen not to return.
A Lingerie Company Made The Lunar Spacesuits of Apollo 11
A company who designed the spacesuits used for the Apollo 11 mission was a lingerie company. The name of that company was Playtex. They are famous for the invention of the Cross Your Heart Bra. The design however led to a secret battle of fashion.
The company was forced or bludgeoned to work under the scrutiny and supervision of aerospace company. This was enforced by NASA mangers and the aerospace company involved was Hamilton Standard. They submitted a suit that was turned down.
Playtex later went into Hamilton Standard, took back their design, submitted it again, and won the contract. Since winning that particular contract, ILC Dover, which is Playtex’s industrial division has been in the business of designing all of NASA’s spacesuits since then.
Only an in-depth research can shed light into the darkest secret of the NASA. For the purpose of maintaining its reputation, the government will do everything possible to ensure some of these secrets doesn’t find their way to the public domain.
One thing that is certain is that the NASA will continue to champion innovations that bothers on space travel as well as achieve more milestones beyond what was believed to be possible.
